  • WARNING! HOT, FRESH BREAD!

    I would drive 30 minutes - no an HOUR - just for this bread. - L’Ostal, Darien. The bread arrives at the table with a warning: "Please wait for the bread to cool down." How hot it could be?!? Oh, we found out. After heeding the warning, it had the bread trifecta: outside crunch, soft inside, and spectacular herb flavor. We would bring anyone any day just to enjoy this bread. Seasonal item at L’Ostal in Darien. UPDATE JAN 2023 This bread remains consistent and excellent. We suggest ordering it at the same time as the sformato, and have them together for the perfect bite. UPDATE DEC 2023 Correction, we would drive an hour for this bread! Again, pair it with the sformato, and dip the bread in the sformato. SO GOOD!

    If you want an extra juicy lamb chop. - Bar Rosina’s, Greenwich. When this dish arrived at the table it reminded me of the Flintstones cartoon - when Fred orders food and the car tips over. Don’t let the picture fool you, it looks like an entrée, but it’s an appetizer. The secret to this dish is hidden next to the bone is a most juicy and not gamey piece of lamb, this is made so from the edge of fat it is able to draw from, much like with marbling in a ribeye.     The hostess said it was the best gnocchi she ever had… and she was right! - L'Ostal, Darien. This gnocchi is silky. The flavor is delicate, yet dynamic. Everything about this dish is perfect (and we don't usually use that word around here). When asked what her favorite dishes were on the menu the hostess replied without hesitation, “Oh the gnocchi, it’s the best gnocchi I’ve ever had.” Well, we can confirm this gnocchi is exceptional! The potato is silky and melts in your mouth. The sauce is balanced and contains a subtle richness that few can execute. The mushrooms are the perfect size with great texture. We concur, this is one of the best gnocchi’s we’ve ever experienced. - L'Ostal, Darien.
